Our Student Jazz Series presents Trio Profondo, a Chicago based ensemble, presents Black American Music through an uncommon and exciting instrumentation. In addition to their original compositions, the trio’s repertoire draws inspiration from the Great American Songbook, Post-Bop, and contemporary Jazz Masters. Trio Profondo’s aesthetic concept revolves around the theme of depth, as exemplified by the group’s exploration of the rich contrapuntal possibilities between baritone and bass voices. They are all graduate students at DePaul University.

Paul Barrilles is a professional musician based in Chicago, IL. Paul found his passion for drums at a very young age. The drums have been his family for 3 generations, and he picked up the drumsticks just like his father and grandfather did before him. Using his sticks and his imagination, Paul is able to blend together a variety of musical genres to fit into any style he is playing in the moment. He has performed with many bands playing different genres from jazz, folk, rock, funk, and R&B. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2016 with a jazz studies degree. Now attending DePaul University, Paul is studying with esteemed jazz drummer and ethnomusicologist, Dana Hall. Paul has shared the stage with artists such as Lenard Simpson, Adam Larson, Reggie Thomas, Geof Bradfield, Art Davis, Kavi Naidu, Foster and the Fellowship, Disconnect Reconnect, and Fareed Haque.

Currently working on his Master of Music degree at DePaul University, Jimmy Farace works as a freelance jazz musician in Chicago, Illinois and has established himself as one of the up and coming jazz baritone saxophonists. Deeply inspired by Gerry Mulligan and Harry Carney, melody and beauty is at the forefront of everything Jimmy plays. During his high school career, Jimmy was recognized in the Illinois All-State Jazz and All-State Concert Bands. After graduation, Jimmy was awarded a full tuition scholarship to the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. In his final year of his undergraduate studies, Jimmy Farace earned a spot in the Disneyland All-American College Band.

Although he specializes in jazz baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, Jimmy works in a plethora of musical genres on many woodwind instruments. Notable past performances include the Drive By Big Band featuring Randy Brecker, the Indiana All-Star Big Band featuring Chris Potter, and the Dan Nix Big Band featuring Jeff Hamilton. Throughout his studies, Jimmy has been blessed to have been taught by Mark Colby, Greg Ward, Walter Smith III, Scott Burns and Tom Walsh.

Stephen Parisi Jr. is a jazz bassist, composer and arranger originally from the Buffalo New York region. He attended the Eastman School of music achieving his Bachelors Degree and receiving the Schirmer Prize for Excellence in 2021. Stephen is continuing his education at the DePaul School of music where he is in the Jazz Workshop under the direction of Dana Hall. Stephen was selected to participate in the 2020 Aspen Jazz Snowmass workshop where he performed with some of the best young musicians in the country working with Christian McBride and Other Esteemed Faculty. Stephen has played with many groups/artists over his career like The Buffalo Jazz Collective, George Calldwell, Bobby Millitello, Mark Kellog, Bob Sneider and Gordon Webster. Russell Scarbrough, and Authentic Vibe. Stephen has also played such festivals and venues as The Rochester Jazz Festival, The Pappy Martin Jazz Fest, The Music is Art Festival, The Colored Musicians Club, The Benedict Tent, and Kodak Theater.
