Merrimans' Playhouse Student Performance Series presents The Noah Brooks Coalition!
Blending the ideas of the past and present of jazz along with the sounds of modern popular music, bandleader and composer Noah Brooks along with his band "The Noah Brooks Coalition '', aim to create a sound of the future while maintaining the roots of tradition. With influences ranging from jazz musicians such as Braxton Cook and Sammy Miller and The Congregation, these influences also extend to modern mainstream artists such as Kanye West and Haitus Kaiyote. The Noah Brooks Coalition presents a modern and unique sound, all while remaining in their roots of jazz. They believe that it is a sound that appeals to not only jazz listeners, but to all music listeners of different genres.
Founded in the summer of 2018, The Noah Brooks Coalition have been playing together for the past 3 years. This group was started by Noah Brooks while he was a freshman at Northern Illinois University as a way to get out and play shows with his friends from school. Throughout the first year, it developed into much more for Noah and the group.
In the Winter of 2018, The Noah Brooks Coalition went into the studio for the very first time as a group and recorded their debut ep. This self-titled ep was officially released by The Noah Brooks Coalition on January 1st of 2019. This ep featured an array of young Chicago musicians and highlighted the diverse and unique sound of the group. The ep featured tunes ranging from Roy Hargrove and a modern take on Nina Simone's "Lil' Liza Jane", all to way to a cover of French-Canadian pop singer Charlotte Cardin's song "Big Boy".
After spending much of 2019 and 2020 playing shows around the Midwest and working as a group on new music, The Noah Brooks Coalition took their next step in solidifying themselves as a band. In April 2021, the Noah Brooks Coalition recorded their first full-length studio record entitled "In The Night" at the Elmhurst College recording studio. This debut record for the group features 8 originals songs composed by various members of the group and continues to highlight to diverse and unique sound that they have to offer.
