Boasting nearly a decade of musical comradery, the Jake Richter Quartet has been gaining notice in the New York Jazz scene since its members arrived in 2018. Now, they're bringing their organic style and driving grooves on tour to the Midwest. Their story starts at Indiana University, where Jake Richter, Connor Evans, and Evan Main met at the Jacobs School of Music. Since then, the three of them have performed together at the Next Gen Jazz Festival in Monterey CA, the Jazz Gallery in New York City, and legendary, The 55 Bar, with luminaries such as Walter Smith III and Marquis Hill. The long standing trio is joined by one of New York's most in demand bassists, Dan Montgomery, who regularly performs with the likes of Ari Hoenig and Remy LeBeouf in addition to leading his own acclaimed groups.

Jake Richter is a New York City based composer, drummer, and educator who aims to create imaginative and engaging music that marries the compositional approach of the western classical tradition with the fearlessness, and deeply honest rhythmic approach of jazz. He maintains an active performance schedule in New York City as a bandleader and a sideman, and appears frequently at venues like The 55 Bar, Room 623, The Bar Next Door, Tomi Jazz, Rockwood Music Hall, Arlene’s grocery, Silvana, Bowery Electric, and the Delancey.

He recently graduated with a Masters Degree in jazz composition from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Miguel Zenon, Jim McNeely, Kendrick Scott, and Jeff Ballard.

Before coming to New York, Richter studied jazz percussion and music composition at Indiana University, where he was a recipient of a full tuition scholarship. There he studied with master musicians Steve Houghton, Walter Smith III, Michael Spiro, Dave Stryker, and Brent Wallarab, among others. He had the opportunity to perform with the aforementioned musicians, as well as luminaries Bobby McFerrin, Randy Brecker, Marquis Hill, and John Fedchock. In 2017 he was the recipient of the David N Baker B.M.I. Jazz Composition award, and in 2016 he was awarded a Downbeat Student Music Award for his arrangement of Wayne Shorter’s Infant Eyes.

Dan Montgomery is an upright/electric bassist, vocalist, composer and educator based in New York City. He is originally from Rochester, New York, and spent several years in Miami, Florida, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Studio Music and Jazz Bass Performance from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, graduating Summa Cum Laude in May of 2015. Dan has performed in groups led by Ari Hoenig, Troy Roberts, Remy Le Boeuf, Martin Bejerano, Nicole Henry and Shelly Berg, and has also performed with Melvin Butler, Keith Ganz, The New York Voices, Rosanna Vitro, The Costa Rica National Symphony, John Fedchock, Nomar and Jose Negroni, Tal Cohen and many other artists as both a bassist and vocalist. Dan has performed at several major festivals and events, including the Newport Jazz Festival (2019), Telluride Jazz Festival (2013 and 2014), the JEN Conference (2014 and 2015), the Monterey Jazz Festival (2015) and the Tonica Jazz Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico (2015). Dan received the "Pathways to Jazz" Grant through the Boulder County Arts Alliance in July of 2019 to help fund his second album "Fly" (2020). Dan also placed 3rd in the International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition in June of 2017, received the "Best Player" award at the Zilina Jazz Contest in Zilina, Slovakia in September of 2017, and was admitted into both the prestigious Betty Carter "Jazz Ahead" Program and the BANFF International Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music in 2018.

Dan is also a distinguished composer. His piece “Type A” was performed at both the 2015 JEN Conference and the 2015 Tonica Jazz Festival by the Frost Sextet, and was recognized by Downbeat as an “Outstanding Graduate Composition” that same year. This piece is the opening track of Dan's debut album, "Storyteller" (available on CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon, Google Music and more). The album received a 4.5/5 star review from "All About Jazz," and was heralded as "a brash, audacious offering of classic modern jazz." This album primarily features Sam Priven on alto saxophone, Neil Carson on tenor saxophone, Jake Shapiro on piano and Evan Hyde on drums. This quintet was formed at University of Miami in 2016, and they have since toured extensively in Miami, the Midwest and San Francisco. Their latest release, "Emotional Machines: Live in San Francisco" (available on Bandcamp), features high-energy live recordings from their five night residency at the Black Cat Jazz Club in San Francisco from July 2019. After this residency, they went into the studio to record their second studio album "Fly", which was released in May 2022.

Dan is an active and passionate educator, as well. He has worked as a clinician at both the Tonica Jazz Festival (2015) and the University of Alaska Anchorage for their annual “Jazz Week” (2016). He was formerly the bass professor at the Community Arts Program, a music program for kids K-12 in Miami, Florida (2015-2018), and a voice and string class leader at the Miami Music Project (2015-2016). Dan also maintains a private studio; some of his private students have gone on to attend the Berklee College of Music, the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and other prestigious collegiate programs.

Connor Evans is a Jazz guitarist and composer originally from Mississippi, now residing and working in NYC.  Connor graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a B.M. in jazz performance. While at IU, he studied with Walter Smith III, Dave Stryker, Steve Houghton, Jeremy Allen, and others. He was a member of the inaugural flagship combo, the Plummer Ensemble, focusing on original music and representing IU around the country. He received a Downbeat award for one of his compositions in this group. Since moving to New York, Connor has worked on his own projects and as a sideman. He's played all around New York at venues such as, The Bar 55, the Bitter End, Bar Next Door, Scholes Studio, the Jazz Gallery, Silvana, Room 623, and more. He's featured as a sideman on a handful of albums that can be found on major platforms, and he released a debut solo guitar project on bandcamp in 2021.

Evan Main is a pianist in New York City, where he moved after graduating from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in 2018. Evan is a longtime student of Luke Gillespie, and also worked closely with Walter Smith III, John Raymond, Steve Houghton, and Dave Stryker during his time in Indiana. Evan seeks to make music with substance and integrity, and enjoys playing a wide array of new music and jazz repertoire with other musicians in New York and elsewhere.
