In his new quartet, Javier Red is composing for and making music with Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Jeff Wheaton (bass), and Daniel Gayden (drums). The quartet serves as a vehicle for musical exploration along three lines: the rhythmic pulse and repetition rooted in West African music traditions, the creative personalities of the band members, and the continual reinvention or reinterpretation of both Javier's original compositions and music from great jazz composers such as Monk, Henderson, Coltrane, and Shorter that have a special connection with Javier's rhythmic explorations.

This quartet has brought its dynamic sound to stages across Chicago and the Midwest, meeting audiences with energy and warmth, and recently captured its first album together, featuring the visionary Steve Coleman, set for release in Fall 2026.
