Our Student Series presents the Alonso Umaña Quartet. Alonso will be presenting an educational program playing music by other drummer-band leaders:  "Max, Elvin, Blakey and Umaña: Leading from the Throne". The band features graduate students at MSU.

Max, Elvin, Blakey and Umaña: Leading from the Throne: celebrates the music and legacy of influential jazz drummers as bandleaders, anchored in the work of Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Max Roach, while also drawing connections to contemporary drummer-composers, including original music by the ensemble’s leader. Through live performance, historical context, and new compositions, the program explores how drummers have shaped jazz through rhythm, composition, mentorship, and ensemble leadership. By placing canonical repertoire alongside modern perspectives, the project highlights the drummer’s role as a creative director and aims to inspire new generations of jazz drummers to see themselves as leaders, composers,…
